Welcome

A message from our director and headteacher.

We are delighted to welcome you to Wixams Academy. We set out to offer the very best for all our pupils, both academically and to develop them as individuals. Wixams Academy is a place where we celebrate both inclusivity and diversity. We are exceptionally proud of our academy, and will continually look to inspire ambition in our pupils to always work hard and be kind to each other.

It is an exciting time across the Academy, in 2024 we move into the second stage of our brand-new teaching block and sports facilities. This will enable us to build on the fantastic GCSE results pupils gained in 2023 and offer even more opportunities beyond the classroom through our rich and varied extra-curricular offer.

We are in the very heart of Wixams, and this is reflected in the community feel within our academy. We have an energetic and talented staff committed to the achievement of our young people. Everyone has a part to play at Wixams and everyone is listened to.

Hywel Jones | Director of Education, KST and

Chris Stainsby | Interim Headteacher, Wixams Academy

Our Sixth Form

wixam1.jpg

Since the Academy opened in 2017, it has gone from strength to strength, and is now one of the most oversubscribed schools in the region, with a strong reputation for academic excellence and personal development. We are proud to continue this tradition when we welcomed our first sixth form cohort in September 2022.

A broad curriculum, excellent teaching, dedicated study and social areas, approachable staff and our ethos of ambition for and belief in all, contribute to our culture of success. We value the individual therefore personal development is equally a priority. There is a wide range of opportunities outside the academic curriculum in which to gain experience, confidence and valuable skills to prepare for university, an apprenticeship, a gap year or to embark on your career after sixth form.

Our relatively small size gives us a highly ‘personalised feel’ which coupled with our cutting edge approach to teaching makes this is a truly unique opportunity.

Our Curriculum

Why and How we implement it

“We believe in providing a broad educational experience and a balanced curriculum. Particular attention is given to those subjects that are proven to aid future success, often the traditional academic disciplines, but the experience of our pupils will embrace technical subjects, arts, languages, health, sport and humanities in line with our aim of producing rounded individuals”.

Our Academy curriculum vision is to “provide EVERY student the opportunity to acquire academic excellence and those skills, qualities and experiences that develop well-rounded, successful and happy members of modern society,”

Implementing our Principles

Each subject develops a long-term plan that explicitly lays out the knowledge and skills students are expected to acquire in order to achieve excellence. This content builds cumulatively in terms of its breadth and depth.

Each subject clearly identifies the ‘end points’ that are necessary to become excellent in this subject and enable students to progress to the next steps and higher education.

A range of formative and summative assessment strategies are used to ‘test’ these end points.

Regular retrieval practice, interleaving and low stakes testing is built into the curriculum to help students form durable long-term memories.
